The Missions Training Course is an amazing opportunity for adults, college age and older, to spend a semester in northern Uganda. This 14-week course focuses on spiritual formation, character development, training to reach the unreached people groups in the 10/40 Window, and training to be sent out as servants to raise up indigenous leaders. Morning classes are taught by Acholi Christians. Afternoon and evening practicums give students the opportunity to learn by serving alongside nationals, working in the IDP camps, caring for orphans and former child soldiers, and focusing on both urban and rural evangelism. Next year’s start dates are January 12, 2009, June 1, 2009 and September 1, 2009.

Anyways it is hard for me to tell about my experiences because I do not even know where to begin. So I guess I’ll start from the top. I stayed with a ministry called Favor of God in Gulu, Uganda. The length of my trip was one month. I lived in the place where most of the coordinating of the ministry took place. I had a bed in a room that I shared with up to 6 men at a time and I was the only American there besides a 65 year old women, which is interesting because she was the one I would go to when I needed a taste of the good ol’ US of A. My trip consisted of all types of different relational building ministries. I would do a new thing every couple of days, things that would range from prison ministry to remodeling an elementary school to trauma counseling in the displacement camps to just playing soccer with the 33 orphans that where under the ministry. It was interesting because the first week I got there Favor of God decided to spend an entire week in prayer, which meant that everyday we would pray for everything from the war in Uganda to America’s presidential race, it was from 8 AM to 4 PM and we would fast during that time as well. This was a surprise to me because I was expecting to be super missionary and do anything and everything but God said no it is time for you to sit and be quit with Him for a while. After the week of prayer I did and experienced so much, I was able to meet so many people and just love on them which is something that they are not too used to. Something I noticed is that in Gulu while we would teach in the prisons, which was my favorite type of work, the local pastors would yell and scream the teaching at the people. I thought that this was an odd way of doing it so when I was asked to teach I would do it in a way that I thought Christ might have and just talked as if talking to each and everyone of those prisoners individually, in a way that they might realize that I am doing this to love on them and to share Christ’s love with them. They responded and I had men in tears asking to be prayed for and wanting this forgiveness, a very humbling experience. I felt as though I was going to serve and do all these great things but I realize now that my objective there was to love people whether through teaching or just hanging out with a boy who does not even speak English. God met me on this trip and taught me so much. I will never forget Gulu and want to return someday soon. So I encourage anyone who is interested in the MTC to go for it 100% it will change you!!!
